Mental Models for Social Workers: A Shorts Primer for Social Workers

Mental models are the internal frameworks we use to interpret the world, make decisions, and solve problems. They shape how we perceive situations, filter information, and predict outcomes. In social work practice, mental models are particularly valuable because they provide structured ways to analyse situations, assess needs, and make informed decisions.

This book is aimed at all social workers (those who are Social Workers and those who are doing social work but may not call themselves such) and will definitely be of use to students, ASYE’s or qualified social workers who want to go back to basic practice concepts.

….a primer is a concise but foundational guide, designed to introduce key ideas in a way that’s both practical and thought-provoking. It suggests something essential but not overwhelming - just enough to equip someone with the core knowledge or skills they need to engage meaningfully with a topic.

Reading a primer should hopefully lead to further reading and discussion.
